If you’re looking at crossover SUVs, you have no shortage of options. The 2026 Mazda CX-5 and 2026 Toyota RAV4 are both terrific choices. Let’s take a look at the pluses and minuses of both to determine how they stack up.
The CX-5 comes in five available trims, ranging from the economical 2.5 S to the pricier 2.5 Premium Plus. The RAV4 comes in six trim levels, from the budget-conscious LE to the well-appointed Limited model. We’ll find most of what these vehicles have to offer a couple steps up from the base model, so let’s take a look at the standard features of the 2026 Mazda CX-5 2.5 S Premium vs. the 2026 Toyota RAV4 XLE Premium with AWD upgrade.
Vehicle Details
The RAV4 comes with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder hybrid engine under the hood with a max torque of 170 lb-ft from the electric motor, 163 hp from the internal combustion engine, and 236 combined net hp.. For the drivetrain, we have optional all-wheel drive and an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission ECVT). With an estimated 45 MPG city / 38 MPG highway, the RAV4 is a sensible choice in terms of fuel efficiency.
Overall, both the CX-5 and the RAV4 are competent performers in most settings, with the CX-5 offering a sporty, responsive driving experience and the RAV4 favoring fuel economy.
The Toyota RAV4 is no slouch either when considering safety. The RAV4 comes with a driver assist package that includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, dynamic radar cruise control, and lane departure alert with steering assist.
We have no major complaints about the RAV4’s interior. With 37.8 cubic feet of cargo space and seating for five, space shouldn’t be an issue. Wireless Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatibility, SiriusXM, a 6-speaker audio system and more comprise a respectable infotainment setup.
The 2026 Mazda CX-5 combines sporty performance with comfort in a stylish package. The 2026 Toyota RAV4 is also a great choice, offering a more vanilla driving experience but excellent mileage from its hybrid engine. Both are excellent, but in our opinion, the Mazda CX-5 takes the win.
