Performance and Fuel Efficiency

The Mazda3 boasts a peppy SKYACTIV®-G 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder engine, delivering 186 lb-ft torque @ 4,000 rpm and 186 hp @ 6,000 rpm. Front-wheel drive and SKYACTIV®-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission with manual and sport modes provide an agile driving experience. With an estimated fuel economy of 26 MPG city / 34 MPG highway, the Mazda3 strikes a good balance between power and efficiency.

The Impreza hatchback has a 2.0-liter SUBARU BOXER® 4-cylinder engine under the hood for 145 lb-ft torque @ 4,000 rpm and 152 hp @ 6,000 rpm. For the drivetrain, we have symmetrical all-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). With an estimated 27 MPG city / 33 MPG highway, the Impreza is a respectable choice in terms of fuel efficiency.

On the whole, both the Mazda3 and the Impreza are more than serviceable performers in most settings.

Driver Assist and Safety Features

The Mazda3 Hatchback has an impressive set of safety features. Standard driver-assistance features include radar cruise control with stop & go, blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert, lane-keep assist, and smart brake support.

The Subaru Impreza Hatchback holds its own in terms of safety. The Impreza hatchback comes with a driver assist package that includes pre-collision braking and throttle management systems, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control.

Interior and Infotainment

Mazdas are renowned for their sophisticated interiors, and the Mazda3 hatchback is a perfect example. Step inside to discover a welcoming interior with an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, 20.1 cubic feet of cargo volume, 91.2 cubic feet of passenger volume, and ample room to seat five. The Mazda Connect™ infotainment system features 8-speaker audio, voice command, Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ integrations, Alexa built-in, and too many amenities to list here.

We have no major complaints about the Impreza hatchback’s interior. With 20.4 cubic feet of cargo volume, 100.5 cubic feet of passenger volume and seating for five, space shouldn’t be an issue. HD radio, Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ integrations, 6-speaker audio system, and more add up to a nice enough infotainment setup.

Conclusion

The 2026 Mazda3 Hatchback exhibits a level of refinement and performance beyond what its price tag suggests. The 2026 Subaru Impreza is also very well equipped. You can’t go wrong with either, but in our opinion, the Mazda3 Hatchback pulls out ahead.
